Redding isn’t the kind of place where things go unnoticed. It’s a city where people care, where small changes feel big, and big changes? Well, they get everyone talking. And lately, there’s been a lot to talk about. The landscape of Redding is shifting in ways that are impossible to ignore. From massive retail upgrades to long-awaited community resources, there’s real movement happening here.
Here are seven major developments in Redding that are stirring up conversations and shaping the future of this Northern California city.
What’s Really Happening in Redding Right Now
There’s something kind of electric about watching a city you love grow and evolve. These aren’t just construction sites or press releases – they’re places that will soon be part of daily life, for better or worse. Let’s break down the biggest projects that are currently redefining Redding.
Holiday Commercial Complex: A Familiar Name, A New Experience
If you’ve lived in or near Redding for any amount of time, you’ve probably been to a Holiday Market. They’re reliable, local, and rooted in the area’s history, going back to 1962. The new Holiday Commercial Complex being built east of Churn Creek and Hartnell is much more than just a store.
It’ll feature a 30,000 square-foot Holiday Market, three drive-thru restaurants, a gas station, and a retail pad. Yes, there’s already a Holiday Market across the street, but that location will close once the new one opens – hopefully sometime in 2025. In the meantime, Quick Quack Car Wash and a new Starbucks drive-thru are already up and running. It’s all happening fast, and it’s going to change how we shop and connect on that side of town.
River Crossing Marketplace: A Retail Hub on the Rise
Let’s talk Costco. When it moved from Dana Drive to Bechelli Lane, it wasn’t just a relocation – it was a massive upgrade. The new space is 152,000 square feet (compared to the old 130,000), and more importantly, it now includes a gas station. That one detail alone has made a big impact.
But Costco isn’t the only part of River Crossing Marketplace. New drive-thrus from Chipotle, McDonald’s, and Chick-fil-A have popped up. One shopping center is nearly finished, with two more planned. No announcements yet on future tenants, but the momentum is clear. This area is becoming a true commercial destination.
Downtown Redding Public Market: Local Flavor, Center Stage
Downtown revitalization has been a focus for years, and the Redding Public Market is right at the heart of it. Scheduled to open in 2025 on Market Street, this isn’t just a place to grab lunch.
Plans include a mix of restaurants, a wine and cocktail bar, a fresh produce grocery with specialty cheeses, and climate-controlled outdoor seating. The hope? To breathe new life into downtown and create a space where locals and visitors alike can hang out, support small businesses, and enjoy something new in a familiar place.
RiverBend Commons: What’s Next for the Old Costco Site?
When the old Costco moved out, it left behind a big, empty space. RiverBend Commons is what’s planned to fill that gap. There have been a lot of ideas tossed around – a dental office, restaurants, and retail stores. At one point, Chili’s was in talks but backed out. Now, Raising Cane’s and At Home (a home decor superstore) are expected to move in.
While there have been a few delays, especially for At Home, construction is moving along. If Raising Cane’s does open, it’ll join an already crowded chicken scene that includes Chick-fil-A, KFC, Popeyes, Dave’s Hot Chicken, and plenty of local favorites. Not bad if fried chicken is your go-to comfort food.
Bethel Church Campus: Expanding a Global Reach
Whether you’re part of the Bethel community or not, there’s no denying the church has a huge influence on Redding. Their new campus and ministry school broke ground this year on Collier Drive. When finished, it will span over 200,000 square feet.
The new facility will house services and schooling all in one place. While we don’t have a completion date yet, parts of the site are already well underway. Parking is in place, office space is emerging, and the project continues to push forward.
D.R. Horton at Salt Creek: Homes Are Coming
Salt Creek on Redding’s west side has been a sought-after neighborhood, and now it’s about to grow. D.R. Horton is stepping in with a new subdivision called Harland. The first phase will include 37 home sites, each with a three-car garage. Floor plans range from 1,825 to 2,538 square feet, giving future buyers some solid options.
The model homes are expected to open between January and February of 2025, with sales kicking off that March. Just around the corner, a new townhome community called Aurora is also scheduled to begin construction in mid-2025. It’s one more sign that Redding’s west side is heating up.
Sierra Pacific Cancer Center: A Vital Community Resource
Advanced cancer care has long been in need in this region. The Sierra Pacific Cancer Center, currently under construction near Cypress and Hartnell, aims to meet that need in a big way. It will centralize care in one facility, offering everything from oncology to radiation, breast consultations, infusion services, and even a pharmacy.
Construction began in late 2024, and the Center is expected to open in 2026. As someone who’s seen the gaps in care firsthand, this project hits home. It’s not just another building going up – it’s a real investment in the health and well-being of the community.
Redding Is on the Move
Watching all these developments take shape has been inspiring. I’ve lived here long enough to know what these projects will mean to people – whether it's a new grocery store that makes your weekly errands easier, a market that brings fresh energy downtown, or a medical facility that offers real hope.
As Redding grows, so does the opportunity to build something meaningful here. If you're thinking about making a move or just curious how these projects might impact you, I’d love to chat.
